Malcolm Fisher

North Star Intern

Biography

Malcolm Fisher serves as the inaugural North Star Intern, an internship created by the Policy Insights Forum (PIF), in honour of Stephen S. Poloz, former Bank of Canada Governor and former President and CEO of Export Development Canada (EDC).

Malcolm Fisher is a passionate young economist with an ambition to serve Canadians as a policymaker. He spent his childhood summers at the Taylor Statten Camps in Algonquin Park, where he developed leadership skills and a love for the outdoors by leading campers on canoe trips across Ontario and Québec.

He built his foundational knowledge in economics at Wilfrid Laurier University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics with a minor in Financial Management. A highlight of his undergraduate studies was his research on the impact of quantitative easing policies employed by the Federal Reserve on the prices of various U.S. assets.

After completing his Bachelor’s degree, Malcolm worked for two years as a Research Assistant in the Financial Markets Department at the Bank of Canada. In this role, he contributed to flagship policy documents such as the Financial Stability Report and the Financial System Survey.

In 2024, Malcolm left the Bank to continue his studies at Queen’s University, where he completed a Master’s degree in Economics. His research focuses on how geopolitical risk is associated with trade flows in information and communication technology industries.
